About
The Rower serves as a pivotal early Cubist painting in Picasso’s oeuvre. Painted in a Spanish fishing village, the work was first thought to depict its man rowing, but it is more likely a study of a seated woman. The figure is defined by multiple complex horizontal layers, all of which emerges from an undefined background. The oval head, rectangular neck, and sharp angles of elbows are all identifiable despite the arrangement of shapes suggesting abstract volumes in space.
