About
On the afternoon of January 24th, 1932, the 50 year old Picasso chose to paint his 24-year-old mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter again. This painting incorporates simplified outlines and contrasting colors and is renowned for its eroticism. Her hands are placed in her lap, one breast is partly exposed. Perhaps she is asleep. A phallus may be seen in her upturned face. This may symbolize Picasso's attraction, or perhaps his feeling of influence over his muse.
Marie-Thérèse had been Picasso's secret mistress and muse since she was 17. They had a daughter, María de la Concepción known as Maya, in 1935.
