Painted just months before the beginning of World War II, the joyful tone of this work carries a darker meaning. Using a bright palette and a background unevenly divided into a brown table and light blue skies, Picasso outlines geometric figures with thick, white lines. Loose brushstrokes add texture to the work, while the incorporation of black grounds the entire image. Here the figures are heavily abstracted, yet two pieces of fruit on the left are easily identifiable. This work and Still Life: Fruit Dish and Pitcher use incredibly similar subject matter, yet the two year difference between the works lends to the stylistic differences between the two. As the later work, Still Life: Fruits and Pitcher is less abstracted but increasingly bold, as the objects seem to surge off of the canvas.
