About
A work from Picasso’s Blue Period, this painting depicts artist Sebastian Juner Vidal alongside an unidentified woman. Picasso uses cool blue and blue-green tones to differentiate between the two subjects and focus the attention of the work on Vidal. The bold color, use of light, and detailed brushwork gives Vidal a powerful appearance so that his face becomes the focal point of the work. Picasso’s treatment of the woman next to him is far less detailed: his use of loose brushstrokes and subdued colors makes it evident that her placement in the work is only to add dimension to Vidal’s personality.
