About
Manet’s composition is itself a variation on earlier artists, which Picasso takes a step further. Picasso spent two years, from August 1959 until September 1961 working on this series of twenty-seven paintings and countless drawings. Here Picasso incorporates Arcadian aspects and abstracts the nude figures as they lunch on the grass. Furthermore, Picasso abandons the perspective of earlier compositions of the theme in favor of a relative two dimensionality that places emphasis on the figures rather than the background and realistic nature of the work.
