About
In September 1934, Picasso returned from Spain fresh from the experience of witnessing a real bull fight. The artist portrayed his experience on a much larger canvas, depicting the bull attacking the tumbled horse, watched intently by women in the stands. The painting is executed in the least naturalistic way possible: over exaggerated and in a frenzy, conveying the emotion that Picasso himself felt while witnessing such a heightened, chaotic moment.
