About
Two women stand on top of the back of a long-maned horse; their arms up in the air triumphant over their difficult task. These circus performers are a part of Picasso’s Family of Saltimbanques, known as La Famille de Saltimbanques: a series depicting Picasso’s main heroes: wandering and roving artists. Circus actors at the time were regarded as the lower class; as underdogs of the society. The key factor that Picasso so adored was the fact that despite their class, they were simply free and independent.
