This painting was directly inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel, Treasure Island, published in 1883. The quote is pulled from a scene in which protagonist Jim Hawkins threatens the pirate Isreal Hands using two pistols. Wyeth created this illustration for the 1911 edition of the book.
