About

William LaRue, Point Lobos State Park, California is a striking image for its high contrast black and white immediacy, as well as its mixed subject matter. Executed during a phase of extensive traveling in the early 1960s, the photograph incorporates White’s career-long interest in nature, as well as his interest in portraiture: the arm and hand which extends from the top of the frame index the photograph’s subject, William LaRue. LaRue was a photographer who attended one of White's 10-day workshops in Oregon and subsequently joined him in a cross-country photography trip, eventually becoming his workshop assistant and travel companion.
