About
Perhaps one of White’s most widely recognized images, Tom Murphy, San Francisco was a key photograph in White’s 1948 series The Temptation of Saint Anthony Is Mirrors. This highly erotic series of images featured 32 photographs of Tom Murphy posing nude and was considered too explicit to exhibit during the time of its execution. Many interpret this series as an exercise in White grappling with his sexuality, a topic that he struggled with internally and through his work for his entire career. The Temptation of Saint Anthony Is Mirrors is also marked by a distinct formal approach whereby White focused on figure portraiture with dramatic studio lighting.
