About
This landscape photograph was captured in 1955, while White was teaching at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The dramatic clouds which fill the sky and cast looming shadows on the landscape, as well as the more distant foliage, is in stark contrast to the rigid structure of the barn and its manicured field. This image stands out as an impressive composition during White’s period of decreased productivity and eventual frustration with the limitations of the rural New York landscape.
