About
Queen Eleanor & Fair Rosamund is an example of de Morgan’s specialization in literary subjects, this time telling the story of King Henry II’s wife and his mistress. De Morgan depicts the wife and queen as a woman shrouded by darkness and shadowy creatures of dragons and apes, while the mistress Rosamund is portrayed with a gentle youth and benevolence surrounded by iridescent white doves and angels. The Queen holds a vial of poison meant for Rosamund in her right hand and grasps the red string which helped her navigate the labyrinth in which Rosamund was supposed to be safely held.
