About
Hope in the Prison of Despair is a prime example of De Morgan’s allegorical work, with two feminine figures physically representing and embodying Hope and Despair. Despair crouches to the right, arms covering her head in uncertainty and sadness, and her body draped by deep grey robes. Hope approaches her from the left, confident in posture and direction, holding a lit lamp. A halo encircles Hope’s head, and alongside the lamp, Hope’s light represents the comfort and steadiness of religious faith drawing closer to Despair in order to assuage her.
