About
Cassatt preferred candid scenes to rigidly posed portraits, and focused many of her works on women and especially mothers. In this example, a mother sits with her back to the viewer while the baby propped on her side looks lazily toward us. The pitcher and basin on the table in front of her suggest that Cassatt is capturing the moments before or after their daily washing.
