After seeing a collection of Japanese woodcuts in exhibition, Cassatt began to incorporate some of their compositional elements into her work. Both her earlier works and many Japanese woodcuts depicted scenes of mothers and children, but Cassatt took this inspiration further by flattening the perspective plane and focusing on the decorative elements in the background. In this scene, a mother props her child on her lap as she washes the child’s feet in the basin of water below.
