About
This work by Cassatt was the first print in a series of ten that she completed after having been inspired by a large exhibition of Japanese woodcut prints. In The Bath, Cassatt leaves behind the traditional compositional features of Western art for the flatness and exaggerated foreground seen in Japanese woodcuts. The drypoint and aquatint techniques can be seen in the thin dark outlines of the bodies and the tub, and the large swath of a single shade of yellow in the mother’s dress.
