About
Cassatt created few self portraits during her career, and in this example she paints herself in watercolor using the characteristic loose strokes of impressionism. Just as her portraits of women reading challenge the societal limitations for women, her portrait of herself painting serves as proof that women too could be successful artists. Her pose conveys the feeling as though Cassatt is painting you, the viewer, through her direct gaze and hand lifted to the canvas facing her.
