While Cassatt beautifully renders the young girl’s face in this bust portrait, the focal points are the large bonnet and coat that frame her face. Cassatt uses loose strokes of pastel alternating between blue, pink, and green to convey the playfulness of the costume. As in many of Cassatt’s other portraits, the girl’s sideways gaze suggests that the artist has captured a candid moment.
