About
Because this portrait by Cassatt was left unfinished, it provides insight into her artistic process. Just as with oil on canvas, Cassatt used the pastel to outline the figure and finish the face in great detail before moving on to the background. While the face is already intricately rendered with porcelain skin and rosy cheeks, the clothes are barely shaded with green and black and the background with a loose wash of orange.
