Later in her career Cassatt began to work increasingly in pastel on paper, while treating the composition with the same wide impressionist strokes that she employed with her oil paints. In many of her other pastel works she left the corners unfinished so that the pastel stands out against the paper, but in this portrait she creates a hazy tone that continues from the background to the chair and the girl’s frilly clothes.
