About
Like many of Cassatt’s works of pastel on paper, this portrait displays the materiality of the medium by leaving the edges unfinished and allowing the viewer to see where the pastel ends and the paper underneath begins. Sarah Choate Sears was a photographer, painter, and art patron, and her daughter Helen was portrayed not only by Cassatt but also by John Singer Sargent.
