About
Many of Cassatt’s works feature a mother and her child, and in this example the two interact through a unique configuration of mirrors. A mirror on the wall behind the sitters reflects a blurred profile of the mother, while the small mirror she holds reflects the child’s face staring out at the viewer. The colors range only between yellow and green, which mimics the large sunflower on the woman’s bodice. Cassatt’s mother and child paintings capture the intimate relationship between the two, without an overwhelming sentimentality.
