About
Cassatt created many portraits of women with their children, and in this pastel work the two are situated in a garden setting surrounded by colorful flowers and lush greenery. Capturing a moment of candidness, the child stands on the mother’s bent knees while the mother supports her, as if she’s about to reposition the child to pose in her lap.
