About
In this pastel drawing, Cassatt carefully renders the baby’s facial expression while leaving the nurse as a few broad sketches in comparison. The artist was well known for capturing the intimacy between women and children without overwhelming the composition with overt emotion. Because of the loose strokes and sparse areas, the viewer gets a glimpse at the coloring process the artist uses while working in pastel.
