About
This is an example of the artist’s pre-Raphaelite style as it uses complex composition and symbolism that emphasizes nature and an inscription from literature. Based on Theocritus’s Second idyll, it depicts two females in conversation whilst brewing a love potion. The watercolor painting is set outside at night, and the owl on the dead tree serves as a parallel between the nature and the actions of the women. Stillman’s use of symbolism in the sunflowers also conveys a message about the conventional roles of women. The sunflowers are facing the light and turned away from the women. This represents an ironic reversal of the traditional roles of men as the “sun” and obedient women as the sunflowers which follow the sun, which directly contrasts the actions of the women who are brewing love potions.
