About

This painting demonstrates Lee Kasner’s turn to collage making in the 1950s. Inspired by Henri Matisse’s work with prints, Krasner creates an image within an image. Her use of blue and black defines positive and negative space throughout the painting, as she utilizes both fluid and cubic shapes to create patterns. Such application of shape also embodies Pablo Picasso’s influence and Krasner’s studies in cubism.
