About
This large painting depicts the Battle of Crécy, fought in France on August 26, 1346, between the French and English. This battle acted as a turning point in the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453) between England and France, when Edward, Prince of Wales (center) struck down the ally to France, King John of Bohemia (bottom right). Prince Edward was called the Black Prince due to his iconic dark armor, seen in the center of the composition starkly contrasted to the pure white of King John. Story painted this large, powerful piece to try and gain entrance to the Paris Salon, he was successful.
