About
This is an abstract depiction of the French romantic novel Paul et Virginieof 1787, a story where the main character must remove all her clothing to be saved, but refuses to give up her modesty and drowns as a result. This photograph does not refer to a specific scene in the novel, rather it suggests the story through its inclusion of the messily draped robes, bamboo-handled umbrella, and scattered greenery on the ground. The two children posing as Paul and Virginia were Freddie Gould and Elizabeth Keown, local children.
