About
Carnaval d’Arlequin is a surreal landscape depiction using colors inspired by Miró’s property in Catalonia. Artists are known to paint Harlequin as a representation of themselves, a practice that Miró discovered through the works of Pablo Picasso. In this painting, Miró renders a Harlequin with a hole in his stomach, reflecting Miró’s hungry and impoverished status of the time. The title alludes to Mardi Gras, and the lively anthropomorphic characters beside the Harlequin aid in that conclusion.
