About

This miniature is a portrait of Abigail Brown Brooks Adams (1808-1889) and her daughter, Mary Gardner Adams Quincy (1845-1921). The ovular painting depicts the two women perched over a fence with ornamental vegetation framing them. Their bright faces shine under matching straw hats as they share the same serene smile highlighting their strikingly similar features. The painting highlights Stuart's skill at producing work similar to her father's which was loved for its flattering likeness and warmth. Abigail was the daughter-in-law of 6th President John Quincy Adams and a prominent figure who called for the preservation of George Washington's Mount Vernon. This painting was ultimately gifted by the Adams family to their friend, Dr. N. James Bodenheimer.
