About
Whistler painted this work from a boat, and though working quickly with uncharacteristic thick brushstrokes and heavy impasto, he conveyed the experience of the rolling waves and distinct horizon line. Despite the limited color pallet, the viewer understands the trashing blue waves and swirling glowing violet clouds.
