About
While this painting is Whistler’s most infamous due to being the subject of debate in a libel suit against the art critic John Ruskin, it is characterized by the moody atmosphere, dark palette, and tonal qualities. As a representation of the firework display at Cremorne Gardens, it uses the dark atmosphere of the night against the bright warm embers of the fireworks to create a glistening composition of light and dark.
