One of the most vividly textures panels of the series, Lawrence offers a keen use of color, shading and light that creates an intriguing visual effect. The broad, unfinished brush strokes create the appearance of a dry and coarse field, intensified by the bright beams of sun beating down. The differently colored waves of land and the visible light from the sun create a geometric patterning to this panel and suggest a cubist inspiration. The sparse trees to the left of the pieces are also withered, demonstrating the desertion of the South during this time of mass migration.
