About
A conversation amongst black southerners about the migration is depicted, echoing popular comic strips of the period. Although he possesses a more simplistic painting style, Lawrence incorporated a great deal of detail in this panel, particularly through his quick brushstrokes. Overall facial expressions and body language, in addition to details such as the closed mouths, downcast eyes, and furrowed brows of the figures are all portrayed simply; however, the brash, thick brushstrokes of Lawrence’s hand enable the figures to appear as highly expressive, essentially giving the figures life and narrative.
