About
Three figures read a large newspaper with wide, eager eyes, fixated on the contents that lay in front of them. Widely read publications of black press encouraged southerners to seek better opportunities North, idealizing leisure activities, education, and cultural life. Simultaneously, these circulating weeklies would elaborate on lynchines, labor exploitation, and various Southern injustices. Unable to distinguish what the figures are reading, an element of mystery us conveyed – are the figures reading about opportunity or misfortune?
