About
The portrait “peaches” is based on a photograph of a prostitute that Liu discovered during her return to China in1991. While the painting is not of Liu herself, she said that she was able to see herself and her suffering in the portrait. The colors around the figure are warm, however, the figure itself is painted in cool purple tones, making the person appear cold and glazed over. The birds, blossoms, and peaches remind the viewer of life and the living. Liu said that she painted the portrait with her own hardship in mind: the dripping paint mimicking streaming tears.
