About
The Sphinx is a woodblock print from Yoshida’s European Series. Yoshida was an avid traveler, outdoorsman, and hiker, and he captured the beauty of various scenes through these prints. He took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese themes to depict the natural beauty of the landscape and architecture. This print depicts various people looking at the Sphinx in Egypt. Yoshida captured the different layers of the Sphinx and the natural degradation of the stone over time by showing the layers in different colors. This prompts the viewers to understand the passage of time and the importance of the Sphinx. In the foreground, people on camels and foot observe the monument in awe which possibly mirrors his reaction after seeing the monument.
