About
Morning on Tsurugi Mountain is one of the woodblock prints from Yoshida’s Japanese Alps, One of Twelve Subjects series. Yoshida was an avid traveler, outdoorsman, and hiker, and he captured the beauty of various scenes through these prints. He took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese themes to depict the natural beauty of the landscape. In the foreground of the painting, a tent and a small fire are visible to the viewer, possibly capturing Yoshida’s adventures and camping. The mountains in the back are illuminated by the sun coming out, which results in the red tint of the tall mountains. The sky is colored in yellow and light blue to show the morning lights. The vibrant painting shows the excitement of a new day and the beauty of nature in the morning.
