About
Lugano (Lugano-Machi) is one of the woodblock prints from Yoshida’s European Series. It depicts a small town in the southern municipality of Switzerland. Yoshida was an avid traveler, outdoorsman, and hiker, and he captured the beauty of various landscapes through these prints. He took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese themes to depict the natural beauty of the landscape. Yoshida clearly outlined the houses through thin black lines and filled each house with vibrant colors. The colors faded as the houses are farther away, showing spatial depth. In the background, there is a foot of a mountain and a clear blue lake reflecting the mountains. The print evokes a sense of serenity and peacefulness on a summer day.
