In a Mountain Shelter is a woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida. Yoshida took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese traditional ink painting themes to depict scenes. He also specialized in creating the impression of being “on the spot” and immerses the viewer into the scene itself. This print depicts people gathered around fire and cooking in a small dark mountain shelter. The perspective of the print immerses the viewer in the scene and creates the impression that they are sitting around the fire with the other people depicted. Although the dark space emphasizes the coldness and darkness of the surroundings, the ember of the fire illuminates the space. In addition, the people seem engaged in a lighthearted conversation and evokes a feeling of cheerfulness despite the circumstances.
