About

Goshiki Plain is one of the woodblock prints from Yoshida’s Japanese Alps, One of Twelve Subjects series. Yoshida was an avid traveler, outdoorsman, and hiker, and he captured the beauty of various scenes through these prints. He took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese traditional ink painting themes to depict the landscapes. This print depicts the view of the top of mountain peaks from the perspective of a mountain plain. The foreground shows the rock formation and peak that the viewpoint is set from. The background shows the vibrant sunrise that is starting to illuminate the rest of the paintings and mountains. Yoshida depicts the sunrise by using blue and pink that is slowly lighting up the otherwise dark painting. This print evokes a feeling of serenity and peacefulness and prompts the viewer to immerse themselves in the scene.
