Cave of Komaga is one of the woodblock prints from Yoshida’s Southern Japanese Alps series. Yoshida was an avid traveler, outdoorsman, and hiker, and he captured the beauty of various scenes through these prints. He took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese traditional ink painting themes to depict the landscapes and human interactions with nature. It depicts campers engaged in a conversation and huddled in a cave by a campfire. The edge of the cliff can be seen outside the cliff and a wooden tent is set up right next to the cave entrance. This print alludes to Yoshida’s passion for camping and the living situations of campers in nature.
