About
Castle of Chillon is a woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida. Yoshida was an avid traveler, outdoorsman, and hiker, and he captured the beauty of various scenes through these prints. Yoshida took inspiration from 19th-century European watercolorists and added Japanese traditional ink painting themes to depict scenes. This print depicts the Castle Chillon, an island castle located in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. Yoshida used black outlines to show perspective, as the castle and scenery in the foreground are thickly outlined with ink and the mountains in the background have a faint outline. The thick outline draws attention to the architecture and beauty of the castle, highlighting its proximity to the water. It is surrounded by trees and nature to emphasize the contrast between nature and the built environment.
