About
Camping on Washiba Mountain is one of the woodblock prints from Yoshida’s Japanese Alps, One of Twelve Subjects series. Yoshida was an avid traveler, outdoorsman, and hiker, and he captured the beauty of various scenes through these prints. This print depicts two men tending to a campfire near a pond of melted snow in the dark. The background shows the peaks of the mountain range covered in mist. The campfire lights up the otherwise dark painting and illuminates the nearby pond which reflects the rock formations of the mountain. This print alludes to his own passion for camping and fascination with nature and emphasizes human interaction with nature.
