About
This work is from Hilma af Klint’s altarpiece series and is one of three paintings that were meant to be displayed together in the most central part of a temple. The works are numbered in the order she envisioned them being hung. Here, the central circle has gold leaf applied, the painting shimmers in light. Hilma used it to show the importance of the work. The painting is meant to resonate with, in her words, “a certain calm and power.” It is an embodiment of the spiritual though it stays clear of any traditional religious motifs.
