About

This piece is the second of three artworks of af Klint’s altarpiece series. The three artworks were intended to be displayed together and are very much in dialogue with one and other. Group X, No. 2, Altarpiece shares a striking resemblance to the first painting in the series, however, it differs in color scheme and composition. Like the first, this painting depicts an equilateral triangle and a circular form. However, this triangle’s apex faces the bottom of the painting and the circular form does not touch the triangle. The body of the triangle is black, while the tip explodes into pink, yellow, and blue. Metallic leaf is used in the circular form to symbolize the ‘heavens’. There is a sort of heavenly spiral that surrounds the circle and descends towards the triangle. This spiral switches from yellow and blue, colors that af Klint associated with men (yellow) and women (blue). It links the two principal objects in the painting together and therefore, symbolically links the spiritual and the physical worlds.
