About
GROUP IX/UW NO. 25, THE DOVE, NO. 1 is one of fourteen (oil on canvas) of Hilma af Klint’s ‘Dove’ series. As do many of her works, The Dove No. 1 draws on Christian imagery. The spiral which divides the canvas appears to be a spiritual setter which connects the bottom of the canvas to the top. This dividing line appears in many other works from af Klint’s ‘Dove’ series. Hilma af Klint owned a copy of the Theory of Colors by the German philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the influence of this book on her artwork is apparent. A reoccurring color palette of yellow/blue, pink/white occurs in the ‘Dove’ series as well. Blue and yellow are used by af Klint to represent male and female. Also present in this artwork, as well as many others from the series, is a contrast between light and darkness.
