About
This piece comes from Hilma af Klint’s altarpiece series and is one of three paintings that were meant to be displayed together in the most central part of a temple. The artworks in this series are numbered in the order she envisioned them being hung. Specifically in “Group X, No. 1, Altarpiece,” there is a golden sunlike circle overlay by an equilateral triangle with its apex facing upwards. The triangle is divided into seven pillars of gradient, homogenous colors, with the center pillar having gold circles in them. It depicts a sort of pyramid and evokes a sense of rising. She uses metallic leaf in these works to express the importance of these pieces. The painting is colorful and bold and while extremely spiritual, it stays clear of any traditional religious motifs.
