About
The Young Sabot Maker depicts a workshop in which an older man watches a young boy push against a saw to carve a sabot, a French wooden shoe. Tanner was inspired to paint this when he traveled to the village of Port-Aven on the Brittany coast and became fascinated with the rural French countryside. The interior of the workshop is humble and seemingly separate from the modern world of late 19th century France. He emphasized the hard work that went into making everyday objects by showing the young boy using his entire weight to carve the shoe.
Tanner gave this painting to his parents. His father, Benjamin Tanner, served as bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Kansas, so it can contain a Christian theme since Joseph, Jesus's father, was a carpenter.
This painting also shows Tanner's sensitivity to social issues such as the importance of training in skilled manual labor.
