About
The Seine depicts the view of the river from the right bank, showing a bridge and the twin towers of Palais du Trocadero in the background. It was one of Tanner’s rare depictions of Paris. The influence of impressionism on Tanner is evident in this artwork. Using distinct brush strokes, he builds a composition of a soft, diffuse light of warm colors including orange, yellow, red. The river reflects the colors of the sky evoking a calm and serene emotion. The painting does not include any human activity except a small boat on the right of the painting. The soft colors combined with the silhouette of the bridge and towers in the back consist of mystical elements that appear in many of his religious paintings.
